2 Corinthians 5:9
So we make it our goal to please him, whether we are at home in the body or away from it.
Our acceptance in Christ is our standing before God. (Ephesians 1:5-6: “He predestined us for adoption to sonship through Jesus Christ, in accordance with his pleasure and will—to the praise of his glorious grace, which he has freely given us in the One he loves.”) When God sees us as believers (with our faith placed in Christ), we are complete in Him. We can’t add anything to His completion or perfection. However, in our passage today, Paul tells us to make it our goal to “please” God. Even though Jesus has finished the work of our salvation, there are things we can do in this life (through His strength) to please Him.
For example:
Hebrews 11:6: “....without faith it is impossible to please God, because anyone who comes to him must believe that he exists and that he rewards those who earnestly seek him.”
1 John 3:22: “…receive from him anything we ask, because we keep his commands and do what pleases him.”
Colossians 1:10: “…so that you may live a life worthy of the Lord and please him in every way: bearing fruit in every good work, growing in the knowledge of God…”
1 Thessalonians 2:4: “…we speak as those approved by God to be entrusted with the gospel. We are not trying to please people but God, who tests our hearts.”
Philippians 4:18b: “…now that I have received from Epaphroditus the gifts you sent. They are a fragrant offering, an acceptable sacrifice, pleasing to God.”
How do we please God? We please God with our faith, by keeping His commands, bearing fruit, the way we speak, and with our gifts -- to name just a few.
How will you please God today? If you look at your activities and behavior over the last week, was God pleased? What opportunities did you pass up? How will you change your perspective going forward?
