“Vanity or Humility?”

1 Corinthians 12:30

Do all have gifts of healing? Do all speak in tongues? Do all interpret?

Thoughts for Today:

In our passage today, Paul continues with more rhetorical questions related to the subject of gifts. Although Paul did not intend this list to be all-inclusive, his point remains the same: Within the body of Christ there is a purposeful and planned diversity. It is Paul's hope the Corinthians will re-discover their mutual appreciation for the value of one another.

When a person in the church body contributes according to the abilities given them, pride in the exercise of a gift should not be present. Whether in the human body or the body of Christ, there can never be a question of superiority, vanity or conceit. And a prideful attitude will lead to the resentment of others. On the other hand, humility attracts respect.

Proverbs 16:18: "Pride goes before destruction, a haughty spirit before a fall."

Proverbs 18:12: "Before a downfall the heart is haughty, but humility comes before honor."

Philippians 2:3: "Do nothing out of selfish ambition or vain conceit. Rather, in humility value others above yourselves."

Questions to Ponder:

What has been your motivation to display spiritual gifts in the church? Is it to glorify God or a more fleshly reason?
